Rage-Farming Trump Mimic Poilievre Scrambles to Pretend He’s Pro-Canada

Loading

Trump and his mimic PoiLIEvreThe trade war that the racist and fascist felon and Putin asset Donald Trump initiated against American allies Canada and Mexico, as well as against China, Colombia, and other nations has brought out the stark differences between Canada’s conservative parties and our centrist and leftist parties. Suddenly caught like deer in the headlights by Trump’s attacks, the federal CONservatives are flailing to try and convince Canadians that they aren’t really the rightwing Maple MAGA extremists they’ve been pretending to be for the last few years. Instead, they are eager to tell us, they’ve been real Canadians all along. Just as loyal as the others. Just pay no attention to their previous comments and all that Canada-is-broken stuff.*

Where our outgoing prime minister, Justin Trudeau, captured the world’s respect for standing up to Trump and defending Canada in a powerful speech, and has made equally strong statements against the tariffs since, the CONservative leader and puerile whiny Trump mimic Pierre PoiLIEvre did what he always does when challenged to stand up for our nation: whined, blamed the Liberals, insulted Canada and Canadians, and offered nothing of substance for dealing with the challenges we face. And he thinks we’re stupid enough to fall for his lies again. As the National Observer wrote, PoiLIEvre has a “problem” telling the truth (emphasis added):

Misrepresentations are nothing new for Poilievre, mind you. If anything, he’s built the massive lead his party enjoys in the polls on the back of his concerted campaign to confuse Canadians about why they’re paying higher prices for things like groceries and energy. But this particular abuse of the truth is so obvious, so flagrant, and so utterly pointless that it’s worth thinking a little longer about what it says…
Pierre Poilievre’s disregard for the truth has been on full display of late, including in his response to Donald Trump’s tariff threat. Why that should be raising questions about his fitness to lead Canada, and what it could mean if he ever does.

Seriously. The man hates Canada. He has said Canada is broken so many times that most observers think it’s his party’s motto. Here’s a snippet of his speech from March 4, 2025:

Before these tariffs came in this morning, you must have been asking yourself: how could things get any worse? Before these tariffs, you were already suffering. You wondered how you’d pay the rent or eventually dream of buying a home after housing costs had doubled over the last decade, rising faster than in any other G7 country.
You’ve downgraded your diet, as food prices have risen 37 per cent faster in Canada than in the United States over the last five years. You might be one of the two million people, a record-breaking number, lined up at food banks — a number that had more than doubled before these tariffs applied.
You’ve likely noticed that your paycheque is not keeping up with the record inflation, as Canada’s GDP has grown less and lower than any other G7 country over the last decade.

Basically what PoiLIEvre gave us was just another of his cookie-cutter Canada-is-broken-blame-Trudeau campaign speeches. He’s been on constant campaign tour — at taxpayers’ expense, of course — ever since he became leader of the CONs. In a piece on Canadian responses to the trade war, The Guardian noted:

Mr Trump’s unpopularity is the central election issue. Mr Poilievre has been slow to adjust. This week he suggested, with all the sensitivity of Liz Truss, that the answer to the tariffs was to cut taxes.

And not content to merely disrespect Canada in public (as he always does), PoiLIEvre made his pitch for the oil and gas industry. It’s almost as if the oil and gas companies owned him… maybe he can’t get a security clearance because it would expose their involvement in something shady in his past. Who knows? But it’s piffle to think that implementing a decades-long process to approve and build a pipeline that won’t see any results for many, many more years would resolve an immediate issue over trade and tariffs or resolve any of the imaginary threats Trump has raised, like fentanyl. And does he really think that oil and gas companies intend to turn their profits over to the rest of Canada instead of passing them on to their shareholders and CEOs as they have always done? His credibility doesn’t gain from that notion.

PoiLIEvre said:

Fourth, we must immediately repeal the Liberal no-new-pipelines law, C-69, a law that not only blocks all pipelines, but stops mines, refineries, export plants and all kinds of other energy infrastructure and makes us hopelessly reliant on one customer, the Americans — a customer we cannot count on anymore.
We must greenlight LNG plants that Liberals say there is no business case for, so that we no longer have to sell 100 per cent of our gas exports to the Americans. We can sell it to Asia and Europe and help break the European dependence on Putin, turning dollars for dictators into paycheques for our people.

Then he got on his old tired ideological nag (aka his high horse) to attack the carbon tax (PoiLIEvre disingenuously calling it the “the job-killing carbon tax”) and whinges about “massive, inflationary deficits.” In a piece titled “Conservative leaders are failing Trump’s tariff test,” The National Observer noted PoiLIEvre’s cynical attempt to use the moment to reiterate his list of whines and gripes:

…leaders like Pierre Poilievre and Danielle Smith completely missed the moment. After a few harsh words for Trump, Poilievre immediately pivoted to his pre-existing political script, blaming Justin Trudeau for everything from rising home prices to longer lines at food banks. He even suggested that the best way to mitigate the damage done by Trump’s tariffs was — you guessed it — tax cuts. “The obvious place to start is to get rid of the Liberal carbon tax,” he said. Of course it is, Pierre.

In another self-aggrandizing presser, PoiLIEvre tried hard to convince the assembled media that the fascist he loves to imitate disavowed him. “The president says I’m not MAGA” PoiLIEvre petulantly stated, which no doubt confused and offended his far-right followers who have been his faithful Maple MAGA ever since he supported the insurrectionist convoy in Ottawa, trying to overthrow our elected government. He’s not MAGA like the Pope’s not Catholic.

But what the racist felon Trump really said was that PoiLIEvre’s failing is that he isn’t MAGA enough for Trump, despite PoiLIEvre’s strident attempts to build a similar cult of personality around himself. Trump apparently wanted PoiLIEvre to man-up and be more of a sycophant racist and misogynist to be a real MAGA Man, maybe more like alleged human trafficker and sex offender — and outspoken Trump defender — Andrew Tate. As the Der-Sturmer-wannabe National Post reported,

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s biggest problem is that he’s “not a MAGA guy,” according to U.S. President Donald Trump.

And yet, as Cult MTL reports, PoiLIEvre, “has racked up endorsements from a who’s who of fascists, fraudsters and alt-right influencers.” That includes such despicable characters as Alex Jones, convicted fraudster Conrad Black, Elon Musk, Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, Gad Saad, and Joe Rogan. With friends like them, who needs a platform based on human decency, morality or ethics, eh? The author of the piece, Toula Drimonis, asks, “Is it not obvious that a lot of morally objectionable and politically dangerous people are supporting Poilievre?”

The Daily Beast called PoiLIEvre, “MAGA’s Canadian Sweetheart.” Le Monde called him “Canada’s Trump-inspired conservative leader,” adding “Like the US president-elect, the Canadian Conservative Party leader casts himself as a victim of the elites and the media, calls for lower taxes and likes to use insults.” US-based Politico asked “Has Canada found its Trump?” adding “DONALD TRUMP may be getting a doppelgänger up north…”

“Stylistically, the overlap [between the two men] is really in their populism,” TED ALDEN, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, told West Wing Playbook. “They both have run as representing ordinary people against the elites.”

Mendaciously representing while actually being members of the elite themselves, that is. PoiLIEvre’s net worth is estimated at $25 million USD, a far cry from what an “ordinary person” is worth, and an astounding amount for someone on a politician’s salary. His real estate portfolio alone is estimated at $13.93 million. These figures make me wonder how he got so rich, and why he won’t get his security clearance. What is he hiding?

Stephen Harper, the far-right ideologue, most despised prime minister in our history, and PoiLIEvre’s longtime mentor and promoter, tried ineffectually to distance PoiLIEvre from Trump recently. The Tyee noted the pro-MAGA Harper has been “been deferential to incoming U.S. president Donald Trump and tech CEO Elon Musk, even as the two threaten Canadian sovereignty.” You can read ‘deferential’ as ‘obsequiously obsequious.’  Of course he has: Harper is head of the far-right, anti-democracy IDU that wants to see rightwing dictators instead of elected governments in every Western nation. Of course he’d want to pander to a fellow fascist.

PoiLIEvre learned his hatred of Canada and Canadians at the feet of Harper when the latter was prime minister and trying to destabilize and undercut our own Canadian democracy. In the Tyee piece, Harper also talked glowingly about “how Poilievre has successfully adopted right-wing populism,” although he then tried to make an about-face by saying “the Conservative leader is not the same as Trump.” Yeah, right. Of course the guy who imitates Trump’s comments and speeches, often word for word, isn’t the same… PoiLIEvre doesn’t golf.

For Canadians, Harper has almost as much credibility as Trump. So if Harper says PeePee isn’t the same as Trump, you can bet it means he sure as hell is as close as he can make himself.

Among those foreign fascists and extremists who have openly endorsed PoiLIEvre is SpaceNazi and Trump co-owner, Elon Musk (aka Muskolini). CBC reported:

In the past week alone, Musk has dipped into Canadian politics on his social media platform several times; endorsing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, showering him with praise, reposting his tweets and applauding his speeches and media interactions.
At the same time, he has mocked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over his resignation, borrowing president-elect Donald Trump’s language to refer to him as a “governor.” He’s even called Trudeau an “insufferable tool.”

I have yet to find any report of PoiLIEvre refusing or refuting Muskolini’s endorsement. Or for that matter, any of those from Trump’s far-right cabal of neo-Nazis. He seems to revel in them. In fact, PoiLIEvre, when asked about Musk’s endorsement by a reporter, mumbled, deflected, and refused to distance himself from Musk. Instead, he seemed to welcome Musk into Canada to build factories here (while also saying “The days of us just handing over our businesses and jobs… are over.” Over, except, it seems for Musk.) But, he took the opportunity to insult and attack the Liberals, without actually answering the question or refuting Musk’s endorsement. Again, as usual.

CONservative parties and CEOs, even in Canada under the threat of Trump’s trade war, have generally conceded and caved in to Trump’s bullying, or worse, praised his tactics and supported his goal of reducing our nation to the servile status Trump called a “51st state.” In large part that’s because corporations expect higher profits from reduced taxes, eliminated environmental and safety regulations, and anti-union laws that have proliferated in the USA. And PoiLIEvre panders to the corporate interests because they are big donors.

Piffleswipe PoiLIEvre has also been making MAGA-like statements about “Canada First” in the same tired vein of Trump’s empty MAGA slogans. Most of PoiLIEvre’s vapid bumper-sticker slogans are merely three words, presented to the gullible followers instead of presenting actual policies or offering viable solutions. Well, to be fair, policies and solutions require thought, planning, and study. Like his hero Trump, PoiLIEvre doesn’t take the time to put together a coherent package because it might distract from the staccato fire of sloganeering and insulting. And his followers are unlikely to read much more than what could fit on a T-shirt. Plus, any actual platform would be subject to scrutiny, analysis, criticism, and exposure to the public. The guy who still refuses to get his security clearance is not likely to want anything like openness, accountability, or transparency to hinder his Trumpesque rage-farming tactics.***

Writing about Trump-loving Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Poilieve, the National Observer added;

If Poilievre and Smith were taking this as seriously as they should, they’d be doing more than confirming their biases and riding their hobby horses… This is a real test of their leadership — and their commitment to their country. They both know that a sizable minority of their own supporters would sooner support Trump than Canada here, and that their respective parties have a habit of tossing out leaders who run afoul of the base.

Sorry, but have you not been paying attention to the comments and actions of these two for the last several years? They both long ago failed any test about their “commitment to their country.” At best, they are quislings who would happily give their allegiance to a MAGA takeover. At worst, they are traitors who would sell out or even give away our country without even a shrug to enable our annexation.**

Canada deserves better.

 Notes:

* Musk is really the Shadow President: the unelected (illegal?) immigrant who runs the Oval Office, and currently is Trump’s co-owner with Putin. Like Trump, PoiLIEvre has been cozying up to rightwing oligarchs and billionaires. The Breach ran a piece in December titled, “Pierre Poilievre is cozying up to Canada’s far-right broligarchs: Just like their Silicon Valley counterparts, some Canadian tech billionaires are trying to push Canada to the right.” PoiLIEvre has loudly praised Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke, but as the Breach reported, Lütke’s Xitter feed was “an embrace of far right-wing political ideas…. he’s called for Canada Post to be gutted, positioned himself as “anti unions” that threaten his customers’ livelihoods, and opposed the right to strike… He has also praised Trump’s threat to enact 25 per cent tariffs on Canada.”

** A reminder from the Calgary Herald in February: Danielle Smith answers critics, says it’s time to give Trump a win: “If we give him a win it may pave the way for a more constructive discussion on tariffs.” And this CBC story: “On Day 1 of Trump’s trade war, Danielle Smith held back her fire. PM and other premiers threw elbows. Alberta’s premier issued a written statement.”

*** PoiLIEvre’s choice of his new “Canada First” slogan has been contentious. The Canadian arm of the neo-Nazi group, The Proud Boys was declared a domestic terrorist organization in Canada. It broke up in 2022 and some of them re-organized as a new hate group called — wait for it — Canada First. The Conversation noted:

Canada First’s network is unapologetically fascist, dedicated to producing neo-Nazi propaganda and connecting like-minded National Socialists. Posts shared in the network of channels include content from Telegram channels associated with Fashlash, an offshoot of the international neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division.

And the Antihate network adds:

Initially calling itself Proud Boys: Canada First, and now just Canada First, the group is overtly neo-Nazi in ideology; calls for the removal and elimination — through violent means —  of Jews, feminists, LGBTQIA2S+ people, Black people, Muslims and anyone not white.

Also in 2022, PoiLIEvre’s campaign team hired the marketing and promotion team that was behind the messaging of the far-right hate groups, Canada Proud and Ontario Proud. Coincidence?

Sanewashing is the act of minimizing the perceived radical aspects of a person or idea in order to make them appear more acceptable to a wider audience. The term was initially coined in online discussions about defunding the police in 2020, but has come to greater prominence in critique of media practices relating to Donald Trump in the 2024 United States presidential election. Journalism organizations and media commentators have suggested actions both readers and writers can take to mitigate sanewashing.

Did Poilievre shift from being pro-life to pro-choice? Was he never pro-life in the first place? Is he not genuinely pro-choice now? Does he even care about the issue enough to have a position? These are difficult questions to answer as Poilievre has never spoken publicly about an evolution on this issue as he did about same-sex marriage. For how outspoken he is on many issues, he keeps his cards close to his chest on matters of morality.

Poilievre was raised Catholic and makes occasional references to God in his speeches. However, none of his friends and colleagues who spoke to me said that faith has, from their perspective, played a meaningful role in his adult life. One former aide recalls Poilievre regularly attending church for a time earlier in his career but says that he would later on turn up at churches only when he was campaigning or attending events. When Poilievre has discussed and debated faith and spirituality with friends, they say it’s in an abstract and philosophical manner.

Rage-farming really has taken over, hasn’t it? Poilievre trying to outdo Trump is an alarming development, especially when it’s clear that the people who get swept up in this kind of rhetoric are often left with even less trust in the system. Is there a real way to get back to constructive dialogue in Canadian politics?

I think the way Poilievre has shifted his narrative to appear more ‘pro-Canada’ really speaks to the performative nature of modern politics. It’s like a game of one-upmanship, where the goal is to stir emotions rather than build any real consensus.

The message that “Canada is broken” was a relentless drumbeat of MAGA MAPLE. It was backed up by vicious attacks on the government, other parties, journalists, and even medical doctors who called out the falsehoods of the MAGA messaging.
As Canadian solidarity strengthens, the MAPLE MAGA crowd are looking increasingly lost. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre built his career on meanness and gotcha moments. But it’s not working anymore.

As Poilievre’s poll numbers began to tank, even Trump had to intervene by publicly claiming that Pierre Poilievre wasn’t really MAGA at all.

Sure, Donald. As if Canadians believe anything you say.

Poilievre, 45, is a populist who has vowed to fight “woke culture” and called for lower taxes and a return to “common-sense politics”. But he has now had to pivot to promising the country would “bear any burden and pay any price” to protect its sovereignty.
The problem for him is that he has already been embraced by many in the Maga (Make America great again) world: figures such as Bill Ackman, the Trump-backing billionaire hedge-fund manager, and the popular conservative podcaster Ben Shapiro.
Liberal Party attack ads feature a split-screen of Poilievre and Trump using near-identical phrases, from “fake news” to “everything is broken” and “the radical left”. “How can you speak for Canada when you sound like Donald Trump?” the ad asks.
“Even his new slogan ‘Canada First’ makes you immediately think of ‘America First’,” said Patricia Martin, a 52-year-old assistant in an accounting firm, who has voted both Liberal and Conservative in past elections but this time will “wait and see” how things pan out in the coming months.

Carney holds big lead over Poilievre as leader who can deal with Trump, handle difficult situations
Mark Carney begins his time as Prime Minister with a big brand advantage over Pierre Poilievre on the question dominating Canadian politics at the moment: Who do you trust to deal with Donald Trump? On this, 47% of Canadians trust Carney to deal with Trump, compared to 33% who trust Poilievre.

Carney also holds large leads over Poilievre when it comes to the economy (Carney 50%, Poilievre 32%) and the cost of living (Carney 40%, Poilievre 32%). And while Poilievre had established himself as the change option in Canadian politics over the past two years, more Canadians feel that Carney would “bring about the type of change we need” than feel Poilievre would (39% vs. 32%).

Trust in Carney on these issues is driven by brand advantages he holds on key leadership attributes. Notably, Carney leads Poilievre by 14 points on “competent” (Carney 53%, Poilievre 39%) and by 13 points on “can handle difficult situations” (Carney 48%, Poilievre 35%).
